The 4S Approach To Literacy And Language (4S) is an accelerated, teaching methodology designed to cater for the literacy needs of all age groups. An important objective is to give adults and other older learners with literacy deficiencies, a ‘second chance’ to obtain language skills they failed to acquire in the education system.
4S stands for Symbols, Sounds, Sight and Self. Its methodology is a “bridge” between the traditional Phonic Systems and the Whole-Word - Look and Say methods. It is different because of the special importance it places on teaching the characteristics of English, the symbol-combination structure of words, the relationship between words and imparting an understanding of how words are made, and importantly, “Why words say what they say.” and “Why words are spelt the way they are.”
What makes the 4S Approach different from many other schemes is its emphasis on exploring words as “symbol combinations” rather than just using the “whole-word” or “single letter-phonic” methods. It introduces the 4S teaching techniques of Targeting, Rhyming and Exchanging as well Clue Words, Sound Families, Word Families, Whole Word Families and Skills Transfer. Special importance is also given to the teaching of spelling and to understanding and learning about the English language.
4S is a learner-centred, user-friendly program that emphasises “ownership” as a vital learning tool. 4S always progresses from the simple to the complex and from the known to the unknown using words common to the learner’s personal experiences and environment, presented graphically and in context.

The SCILLS Audio program in conjunction with the 4S SCILLS Companion booklet has been designed to reinforce, revise and, where needed, re-teach the key concepts learnt in the SCILLS E-Learning program. The audio format presents new, additional and relevant examples which are introduced to further expand upon and enhance the participant’s word recognition, word creation and general literacy and language skills.
